The True Cost of Home: Remembering What We’re Built On

There’s something about Memorial Day in North Carolina that quiets the soul. The streets slow down, flags ripple gently in the breeze, and that sweet smell of fresh-cut grass mixes with the smoke of a backyard grill. It’s the unofficial start of summer, sure—but it’s also a sacred pause. A moment to remember that the freedoms we enjoy weren’t free. They were earned, dearly, by men and women who laid it all on the line so we could live, love, and come home safe.

And y’all know I don’t say this lightly—home is at the center of everything I do. Every real estate license I teach, every agent I coach, every deal I help you close—it’s all rooted in that one word. Home. But Memorial Day reminds us that home isn’t just a structure with bedrooms and a backyard. It’s a right defended by heroes. It’s a legacy we get to live out. And for some families, it’s a memory of someone who didn’t make it back but gave their life so others could settle in peace.

Real Estate Is About Service—and So Is This Day

If you’ve ever worked with a military family, you know how deep their sense of duty runs. They move often, they plan carefully, and they carry stories most of us will never fully understand. But they show up—with grace, grit, and gratitude. And I believe it’s our job, as real estate professionals, to meet them with that same spirit of service.

This weekend, while others are planning cookouts or snagging a good sale, I encourage you to take a quiet moment. Light a candle. Call a veteran you know. Visit a local memorial. Then, ask yourself: how can I show up more fully in my work? How can I honor this day in a way that extends past just a Monday in May?

Host With Heart: A Memorial Day Gathering with Meaning

If you want to bring your community together in a heartfelt way, consider hosting a Memorial Day Gratitude Gathering. It doesn’t have to be big—just sincere. Set out iced tea, light refreshments, and maybe a small American flag for each guest. Create a “Wall of Honor” where neighbors can write down the names of loved ones they’re remembering. Share a few words about what home means to you and how this business is, at its core, about serving others.

You could even partner with a local veteran-owned business for catering or gifts. It’s a beautiful way to pour back into the community while building trust and connection with the people you serve.

From the Porch to the Profession

I believe with all my heart that real estate is a service profession. We’re here to guide, protect, and educate. We’re not just selling homes—we’re building security. We’re giving people a place to raise their families, to rest, to heal. And that kind of work deserves to be done with integrity, humility, and care. The same kind of qualities our military teaches and lives out every single day.
